There was a policy at the time that Maharaji had saved a lot of young people from drugs by offering a shelter to 'save' them. This was actually vaunted at the time (they were in 'intensive care').

That might be what the cult says now but it's simply not true.  The "intensive care" metaphor had nothing to do with drug use or abuse. Rather, it was all about ridding ourselves of the poison of our egos and minds.  We needed to be "hospitalized" because we were so "weak" in our spiritual development.  This had absolutely nothing to do with drugs.  Absolutely nothing.
