The point, Lexy, about Kate | |||

being starkers and relieving herself in the desert is that, while superficially attractive as a pornographic visual experience, it actually evokes great compassion. We men are hard-wired evolutionarily to melt at the sight of a woman's tears. Consequently, how much more at one pissing herself while being shattered emotionally and naked (does this pass the Mods? - it's a serious point). It's at this point that the film becomes something greater than merely a movie of cult deprogramming, and starts to become art. Yes, Harvey is a bit sleazy, but this is exactly the point (do you think Jane Campion is dumb?). He is an opportunist who is profiteering from his original cult membership (with a guy called Singh) in order now to rake the benefits from other victims. However he is carrying a secret burden of his own unacknowledged emotional hangups. He believes himself to be invulnerable because of his advanced intellectual defences. However, faced with a vulnerable supremely beautiful naked woman, he does the usual thing, which IMO is to resist her firmly and nobly twice, then completely capitulate. It then becomes a very touching story of the redemption of two not so bad at all people, worked out through a number of bizarre but relatable scenarios. It's actually a very beautiful film, with much wisdom, and a very happy and successful conclusion all round. Jane is a master at such films - remember The Piano - though possibly leaving out the last episode. Great and uplifting stuff - very clever and subtle in all respects. As I have said - it shouldn't be viewed as primarily a cult deprogramming movie, though I can't really see how it could have been explained differently in advance.
