Mike,

Please don't be misled by the Wiki ref! Yes, the Wiki model breaks when it listens to NRM academic apologists rather than the folks who have been mugged by cults, but I think we might see a little change in that regard, starting soon ...

And sorry to be less than thrilled with the idea that "the social construction of reality" extends to mathematical entities. I think that mathematics (although not sociological or psychoanalytical theory) is the way it is, quite independent of the way humans are. For if brain functioning is rooted in the real world, then there is such a thing as real truths. That's all.

It's the hard question, the problem of consciousness as such, that interests me. It's a fair question, of great practical interest to anaesthetists, among others! Why and how are some, but not all, physical processes accompanied by conscious experience and sensation?

Some people are suggesting that this happens when an organism adds information to its body or immediate environment. A situation which can be run back and forth in time without affecting its information content is mechanistic, determinist and computable. No room for, or point to, awareness there!

Contrariwise, an organism that can act freely (non-computably) could pull off that trick by being able to add information to its body or immediate environment. Beings that can affect the course of events in the world at least have some use for awareness ...

Regards,

Jonti
