Jerry, I agree that it could have been taken as insulting, on a second read. It wasn't intended to be. I know that one cannot really objectifiy something that only they can experience. However, those questions are ones that a person with said experience can ask themselves. In other words, just because I, and I alone, experience a thing doesn't mean that "I" should not ask questions about it to myself. In other words, an experience of a hallucination can still be thought about and questioned with some detachment, critical thought and logic. What is the most likely explanation? That would be a decent first question, right? What do I think it is and why do I think it is that? Are preloaded beliefs, once again, filling my head like so many bees or are they no part of the equation? Questions of that variety. In other words, just because an experience cannot be truely objectified, that doesn't give it, and anything I might think it to be due to preconditioning, a free pass. If I have the ability and inclination, I can certainly describe any experiences had to others, right? So when I ask, "what do you mean by deepest," that is what I mean? Can you describe what "deepest" means? Why do you think it so "deep?" Come up with some reasons, at the very least, for why you believe it to have been a "deep" experience vice a shallow one. Is that insulting? It's like the spurious claims made by aroma therapists about "many scientists studying," the phenomena. Ok, I have not heard of any scientists studying it, so when I ask, "Which scientists, organizations or how many," that would be the reason. That plus the fact that, at least inititially, I don't believe that to be a true statement. This can apply to just about any spurious (read that: no real detail or fact supplied) claims of paranormal activity, to include "deep experiences" of self, god or anything else that cannot be objectified. Hyperbole seems to be the hallmark of those claims, as well. So when I hear a comment, by anyone, that starts with "most," "deepest," "best," etc, my bs detector goes into overdrive. Here is a more neutral sample that could apply to "me:" The discovery of the Mira variable, and it's analysis, is the MOST momentous thing since Einstein proposed the theory of relativity. See my point? How are you going to defend against that statement? How are you going to deny it? Even if you don't know what a Mira variable is, your BS detector is probably in full swing due to the nature of that statement. THAT is what I'm talking about, Jerry and it is important for everyone to be reminded of it occasionally because we are deluged with non-critical thinking on an almost second by second basis from every possible quarter. Now, was that statement a bit over the top? Maybe....... No, I certainly wasn't trying to insult Hammy...... I like Hammy! One of my favorite folks, even though I don't believe I've ever met this person physically....... Modified by NAR at Thu, Apr 14, 2005, 10:50:39 |
