In the first matter, I have to conclude that you are doing a Hutton. That is, refusing to draw the conclusions demanded by the evidence. Not that it matters -- we are agreed that the man is plainly loco, whatever the medical term would be.

The Milligan experiment should not obscure the moral point that it does not matter how easy or hard it is to engineer bad behaviour from people. That is, the behaviour is still abhorent, no matter how readily it is elicited.

Of course the agitators bear the heaviset responsibility for war crimes, for conjuring delusions and stoking the madness of crowds. But the fact remains that each of us can make choices, and each of is responsible for our own behaviour.

That's just the way it is, and, at least as far as I can make out, it's the way things have to be.
