The only reason Prem Rawat ever had those photos of his father above his own thrones is because Shri Hans was Prem Rawat's Guru Maharaj Ji. There was never any confusion or "concepts" or ambiguity about that, either.
Actually one of the main reasons for Shri Hans' pictures and Rawat's references to him concerns the "succession problem" that afflicted all mystagogue traditions. (If you recall, Rawat had something of a succession problem of his own.) What he's doing is using a commonly accepted set of traditions to amplify his "claim to the throne." Kim Jung Il is doing the same thing when he references his father, Kim Il Sung, the "Great Leader." (The agreed-upon term for him, to differentiate him from his father, is "Dear Leader.")
