Best password manager to use for 2020: 1Password, LastPass and more compared

This CNET article lists LastPass (Best Free) and 1Password (and others).

I use the Premium version of LastPass because I wanted the two factor authentication (2FA), but based on the description below if you don't want that 2FA the FREE LastPass will certainly suffice. 2FA is cool, but also a bit of a pain in the ass.

Note: I'm not sure about the 2FA, it says below that you need Premium LastPass for use with YubiKey. There are other 2FA's like Google Authenticator. So, I'm not too sure about the Premium/Free and the 2FA features.

All the passwords and other data are first encrypted on the PC and sent to the cloud for storage. LastPass has had some security scares, but they've managed to fix them quickly.

I have hundreds of accounts (URLs, userids and passwords) in my LastPass. For practically every website I log into I actually have a separate userid and a separate complex password. There's no way for me to remember the hundreds of account passwords I have.

I also use LastPass to store my passport, driver's license, addresses where I've lived going way back.

And as the article says LastPass works across devices. I have it on my tablet, phone and PC.

Here's the categories of things you can store in LastPass:

  • Passwords

  • Notes

  • Addresses

  • Payment Cards

  • Bank Accounts

  • Driver's License

  • Passports

  • Health Insurance Policies

  • Wi-Fi Passwords

  • Email Accounts

  • Databases

  • Servers

  • Software Licenses (very useful!!!)

Here's some of the juicy quotes:

Some of our other picks have a free option, but most limit you to just one device if you don't pay up. The free version of LastPass stands out as the best password manager in this category by giving you the ability to store passwords, user login info and credentials and sync all of it wherever you want across mobile devices and browsers. You can also share a login item with another person.

For $36 a year, you can purchase the Premium version of the password manager to share passwords, logins, memberships and other items with trusted family and friends, use multifactor authentication through YubiKey and get 1GB of encrypted storage.
