Pretty much everyone living in the States who I communicate with thinks the same as you. They think that the situation and management of the pandemic there is a train wreck. And I guess they are planning on continuing social distancing as much as possible despite official policy. So no, I don't think there is anything wrong with your perception.

But of course, the people I associate with are a specific subset of the population. Clearly there are people who think differently.

You may be right that things we will get a break over the summer months. If for no other reason than people spend more time outdoors. Let's hope so. It does seem likely that there will be a second wave coming up though.

I think one of the main differences between Germany and the USA right now is that here we have a pretty good infrastructure in place now for testing and tracing. I think and hope that with this we have a fighting chance to avoid a giant second wave. Outbreaks will happen but hopefully these can be contained. But it might not be the case and we will find ourselves in another lockdown in the fall. People are basically expecting that here.

In the USA I get the feeling that things are way too chaotic, so a second wave is much more inevitable. That is why you have to protect yourself.

At the same time, you should be reasonable with yourself. Follow the advice of that article that Pat posted. The biggest risk scenarios are being in enclosed spaces with a group of people for long periods of time. So take the time to go outside and even see people so you don't go crazy.

Right now I am seeing small groups of people, even indoors. This is because at the moment the infection rate is very low in Berlin. So I and many people are seizing the moment while it lasts.
