There was a small protest like this yesterday right near where I live in Berlin. We only realised it because there were tons of police around.

It was an illegal demo. Normally you have to get permission. And normally there are demos just about every weekend somewhere in Berlin. But right now they have severely restricted demos and if they do give permission I think it has to be no more than 20 people and will masks and social distancing. The police came to break it up. It had some hundreds of people and almost none were wearing masks and they all ignored social distancing.

It was really hard to find any info about it. I actually asked a policeman on the street. But in the little media info I could find, it was a weird collection of extreme left and right. And there were even some people wearing Trump 2020 hats or holding signs. The basic message seemed to be that the corona measures are a secret totalitarian scheme fueled by the pharmaceutical industry and Gates. Or something like that.

The reason I post this is basically to say that there are crazy people everywhere. The difference here is that they are very marginalised as opposed to the US where Trump is cheering them on. This is just incredibly f##ked up even for Trump.

While I am here: The basic situation in Germany and the US is similar in the sense that both are federalist countries. So like the US, decisions to close schools and stores can only happen on a state level in Germany.

But the difference is this. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has unified the population by making speeches marked by calm reassurance and pragmatic realism. Also because she used to be a scientist, she is able to credibly explain the science to citizens. But the day to day briefings she leaves to others. What she instead has done is behind the scenes managed to unify all of the governors here (there are 16). The measures in each state are not identical but very similar.

Just to emphasise the point, Germany normally has it's own pile of political divisions. But because of her leadership everyone has put those aside and is working together. This could and should be the same case for the US. Clearly Trump is not capable of this, but it is very sad.

There will always be some outliers out there that will not cooperate. But it is up the leadership of the country to get as many people on board as possible. This kind of crisis can only be managed through universal cooperation.
