Lived here all my life(70 years as of a few days ago). I mostly lived in the DC area but have also lived in New England, the Midwest, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and both NoCal and SoCal.  I witnessed racism in all these places.

In the 1960's and 70's, I witnessed overt racism as despite being a white boy I was denied service because my girlfriend was black. I'll never forget the moment I realized this was actually happening and have watched this ignorance ever since.

Things quieted down about race in the 80's and 90's mostly because Black leadership was weak. First, the Reverend Jesse Jackson and then the Reverend Al Sharpton became the voice and they were portrayed (and probably rightfully so) as self serving hucksters/grifters.

Bush's fake wars in Afghanistan and Iraq began to reignite the issue as many poor kids from the inner city both black and Latino were being induced into the volunteer army to escape their ghetto like existence. Those that survived combat experience were basically ignored by the Dept of Veterans Affairs...........and then came Obama.

The GOP saw an opportunity.  On the night of his inauguration 2009, GOP met and decided they would oppose everything he favored no matter what. They knew they could fire up Billy Bob in the South and in all rural areas of the country by calling him a nigger but using the code word "Muslim" instead.  They allowed the already thriving Birther Movement to continue.....and then came Trump.

Trump knew how to play this subtle racism and that combined w/flawed Hillary led him to victory....leading us today to a very divided country.....worst I've seen in my 70 years.
