#9. The Chosen-People Complex: This is the belief that “Our group is more spiritually evolved, powerful, enlightened and, simply put, better than any other group."

This was my spiritual disease. What was yours?

Interesting article Steve and thanks for posting it. I'm kind of ashamed and also at the same time glad to be able to say that I partook in all these spiritually communicated diseases at different moments in my life. I also helped spread them. More to the point I find I am still subject to them if I don't watch myself. The basis of all of them seems to be rooted in vanity.
Even profound moments of humility, because they could not be sustained, caused the activation of this almost primal nerve. Very insidious and hard to spot, because the whole world operates on it to various degrees.
I looked deeply into this lately and saw that even greed is a vanity, all the wrong in this world has a core of vanity, in fact it is the downfall of the human race. The parable of Lucifer's fall comes to mind. In english there is that saying when something is 'in vain'.
I look around at all our striving as individuals and as nations and that is the majority of what I see. Prem has a mega dose. I would like to sing 'you're so vain' to him one time! but this list in the article you posted, as well as candid observations of myself make me realise that although I'm not 'as bad' as he is I'm not exempt from the illusions of false pride

Interesting article indeed. so much rings true.
At the very end there is a quote and recognition of a Marc Gafni.
Below is an article about Mr. Gafni. He has quite the troubled past as a "Spiritual Teacher"

Thanks Howard, the article you've linked rather confirms the sense I had made of Steve's article - namely that the writer was under the thrall of Marc Gafni and he sounded like a manipulative guilt-tripping self-obsessed Jewish teenager.

Even worse, he's 55 years old and a guru.

Suzy, you are an absolute darling but go read that list again, spare a drop of compassion for the woman writing it and recognise she is shilling for her boyfriend.

Every one of those things from 1 to 10 are subtle putdowns for the reader - from a guru to his followers - accept enough of them and only Marc Gafni is left standing.

The Huffington Post doesn't sound too crazy about this guy.

You are right about the girlfriend doing a PR exercise for her guru /lover. Who better than a guru to pint out the pitfalls of following him.

funny how it ends up with the follower in the pitfalls the guru's pointing out.  As a cult member, I was always on the back foot.

As a recovering ex-cultie I decided to be very non-critical of myself - there is always plenty of people to point out your faults incase you miss them.

now I am back to normal and self-critical.  But with attitude!  No more absorbing the blame for someone else's fault is how I feel.
