I looked up who wrote Killing Me Softly. The whole song hung on the one line - Killing me softly with his song - but where did the line go? nowhere, just a lot of production, that's how I felt about it at the time, didn't ever really enjoy listening to it, just liked the line.
The back story is of an aspiring lyricist who attended a Don Maclean concert and came up with it (well he did have a very nice singing voice) and she shared it with her already in a successful professional partnership as the lyricist friend. It's attributed as co-written by the two of them, then it was put to music by his composer partner and then it was sung by Roberta Flack.
