ah okay so it is Alain Botton - I could remember the initials but not the name yes that is the person I was thinking of.  I just looked him up - 46 yrs old, he looks very sophisticated and world weary.

But can you imagine it, walking up that river edge, plodding along through the dry sand, the sun so hot.  Day after day.  And he's not looking for food for one moment.  He is a romantic hero from the world of jaguars.

oh good grief, if romance is that modern, Shakespeare doesn't even get a look in!

Just because there was a philosophical movement to attribute value to romance doesn't mean they invented the stuff itself.  I don't even believe that's the first time love has been sentimentalised either.  I bet that's happened in the past.

okay so an attempt at definition of the term romance...  the dictionary has a whole list of valid options, too many to list them all but I like the first one - a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.  It's a good start.

Watching that footage it struck me as almost miraculous there should be this male jaguar there so handy, nearby in all that vast jungle, looking for her, following her up the river bank as she looks for a feed and then finally settles down.  and there are all these improbable romantic occurrences, like those frogs who all abseil into one particular pond on one particular full moon.

we are romantically-driven creatures.

all the advertisers and salesmen know that.  so do all the cheats and the frauds.

attempting to act as if we aren't romantically driven isn't any sort of an answer.
